Day 9 | Batman: Arkham City
There are a lot of Batman games I like, but this one may easily be my favorite, and not just out of the Arkham series, but overall. Many people have talked about why, and a lot of emphasis is put on how the game makes the player feel the closest we’ve come to actually being the legendary hero. After that amazing opening, it isn’t long before Bruce Wayne dons his suit and is off to rescue the innocent, but those first moments of zipping through the city and gliding down to pummel enemies from the sky or shadows seals the deal. The game is fun and offers an enthralling experience. Traversing this section of Gotham and fighting crime is just a side activity to supplement a great story and environment, but I find it to be one of my favorite parts of the gameplay. I love the combat system, gadgets, and abilities that can be unlocked, as it all has a great flow and doesn’t ever feel old, even if it can kill my thumb. The boss fights are excellent, but the standout is surely the Mr. Freeze encounter, which can’t be rushed into or handled with sheer force. There was so much to see and do, side quests that could only be done at different times, seeing Calendar Man on certain days, or even visiting crime alley, where Bruce’s parents were murdered. My favorite part though may be the voice acting and writing from Paul Dini that takes many elements from the animated series, which is one of my favorite cartoons.
